In January 2001 he obtained a position as tenured Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) and in December 2017 became Professor at the University of Vigo, where he coordinates the research group Language Variation and Textual Categorisation. This has received funding from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (grants BFF2001-3505, HUM2005-02351, FFI2009-11274, FFI2013-44065-P and FFI2016-77018-P, PID2020-117541GB-I00) and the Autonomous Government of Galicia (grants INCITE 08PXIB204016PR, CN2012/294, GPC2014/060, ED431C 2017/50, ED431C 2021/52).

Javier was the supervisor of the PhD dissertations of Victorina González-Díaz, Rosalía Rodríguez-Vázquez, David Tizón-Couto, Beatriz Tizón-Couto, Evelyn Gandón-Chapela, Yolanda Fernández-Pena, Carla Bouzada-JaboisSofía Bemposta-Rivas and Elizaveta Smirnova, and is currently supervising the PhDs of other postgraduate students at the University of Vigo. He has organized several national and international conferences, including the Second International Conference on Late Modern English (November 2004), the First Vigo-Newcastle-Santiago-Leuven International Workshop on the Structure of the Noun Phrase in English (October 2009), the 28th International Conference of the Spanish Association for Applied Linguistics (AESLA; April 2010), the International Workshop ELLIPSIS2012: crosslinguistic, formal, semantic, discoursive and processing perspectives (November 2012), 'Englishes Today 2013' (October 2013) and the 28th International Conference of the Spanish Society for Medieval English Language and Literature (SELIM; September 2016), the 7th Biennial International Conference on the Linguistics of Contemporary English (BICLCE; September 2017) and 'Modelling the linguistic architecture of English: theories and methods' (May 2018), International Workshop on Language and the Brain (October 2019), 6th Prescriptivism International Conference Modelling Prescriptivism: Language, Literature, and Speech Communities (September 2021), International workshop ‘Advancing code-switching research' (October 2022), International Workshop ‘Modelling the linguistic architecture of English: cognitive and empirical developments’ (January 2023), 32nd European Systemic Functional Linguistics Conference (ESFLC2023; June 2023). He is also heavily involved in journal editing: managing and review editor of Folia Linguistica, co-editor of SEDERI (Yearbook of the Spanish and Portuguese Society for English Renaissance Studies), co-editor of Research in Corpus Linguistics (RiCL) and editor of e-AESLA. Over the years he has held visiting positions at the Universities of Manchester, London, Edinburgh, Oxford, Helsinki, MIT, Princeton, Cornell, California at Santa Barbara, Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Georgia, Liverpool, Wolverhampton, Cambridge, Kent, Wisconsin-Madison, Lancaster and Henan University (Kaifeng). He was appointed Adjunct Professor by the School of Foreign Languages in Henan University (China), and Honorary member of the Research Group in Computational Linguistics, University of Wolverhampton.

Javier’s main areas of specialization are word order and information packaging in the clause; multidimensional model of register analysis; grammatical variation in recent diachrony; and the impact of performance preferences and ease of processing on the design of grammars.
