On 18 November Dr Jukka Tyrkkö delivered the seminar Corpora, XML and TEI at the Faculty of Philology and Translation of the University of Vigo. Dr Tyrkkö is a Fellow at the Institute for Advanced Social Research at the University of Tampere.
The English Linguistics Circle (ELC) network has received funding under grant no. FFI2014-51873-REDT from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, within the programme of Thematic Networks of Excellence (‘Redes Temáticas de Excelencia’).
Prof Dr. Marianne Hundt (University of Zürich) visited our group on the second week of September to do joint research with Elena Seoane, one of our members. Together, they are examining variation in academic Englishes, in particular differences regarding degrees of author involvement as represented in the use of voice alternation.
Maria Luisa Carrió Pastor, senior lecturer at the Universitat Politècnica de València, delivered the lecture “Research in linguistics – publish or perish!” at the Faculty of Philology and Translation in Vigo on September 24 2014, following an invitation by the LVTC group.
On 26 August it was announced that Nuria Yáñez-Bouza has received generous funding (88,000 Euros) from the Xunta de Galicia, Consellería de Educación e Ordenación Universitaria (Axudas para proxectos de investigación desenvolvidos por investigadores emerxentes)
On 3 April 2014 Dr Philip Durkin gave a seminar entitled Etymology and the OED: linguistic approaches to lexicographical problems at the Faculty of Philology and Translation. Dr Durkin is Deputy Chief Editor and Principal Etymologist of the Oxford English Dictionary.
Dr. Magnus Levin conducted a seminar on "Change and variation in the English verb phrase, with a focus on progressives and Global Englishes" on 23 October 2013 at the Faculty of Philology and Translation. Dr Levin is Senior Lecturer at Linnaeus University (Department of Languages), where he teaches English linguistics and language proficiency courses.
On 18-19 October 2013 we will host the International Conference Englishes Today: Theoretical and Methodological Issues, with the following plenary speakers: Christian Mair (Freiburg), Stephanie Hackert (Munich), Marianne Hundt (Zurich) and Edgar Schneider (Regensburg).
On 22nd April 2013, Michael James O'Donnell (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid) conducted the workshop “Systemic-Functional linguistics and corpus annotation” at the Faculty of Philology and Translation in Vigo, invited by the LVTC research group.
